For Home Studio Musicians and Project Studio Engineers Looking to Confidently Mix Records They Can Be Proud to Release...

How to Create Polished and Professional Mixes That Explode From Your Speakers...Using Only the 5 Plug-ins You Already Have in Your DAW

Yes! I'm Ready to Learn the Mixing With 5 Plug-ins System!

Hi, I'm Björgvin Benediktsson

I'm an author, musician and engineer; and the audio educator behind Audio Issues. I'm here to help you turn your amateur demos into professionally produced mixes you can be proud of.

I've helped thousands of musicians like yourself make a bigger impact with their music by teaching them how to produce themselves in their home studio.

Since 2006 I've written over 1,000 articles and tutorials on audio production, both on Audio Issues and for other audio publications such as MusicTech magazine, SAE Institute, Audiotuts+, The Pro Audio Files, and Recording Revolution to name a few.

I started Audio Issues back in 2009 as a way of remembering all of the audio engineering topics I was learning in school. I was an amateur back then just like you, trying to remember all the jargon my professors threw at me. I never realized that my writing would go on to help thousands of home studio musicians and mixing engineers all over the world.

My mixing techniques have helped countless real-life musicians gain the confidence and skills to make professional mixes they can be proud of. They've used their mixing skills to successfully release their own records as well as learned to use their new-found mixing skills to get paying jobs from their home studios.

But let me tell you, I've come a long way since the beginning...there was a time I had no idea how to mix my songs.

I used to suck at mixing. I wanted it to be fun and cool but it was just intimidating.

I didn't know any better so I kept randomly slapping plug-ins on every track, and shrugging my shoulders because I couldn't figure out how anything worked.

My mixes sounded boomy in the low-end, the drums sounded boxy and my overall mix balance was always either too harsh or too muddy.

Put simply, my mixes sounded unprofessional and amateurish.

The reason why was simple. I had no plan of action, and no concrete steps to make my mixes sound like I wanted.

My guitars kept getting in the way of the vocal and my bass guitar always clashed with my kick drum. I didn't know how to create separation between any of my instruments! Every time I used an EQ I had no idea how much (or where!) I should boost or cut to make my mix sound better.

If EQ was hard, compression was "Expert Level Difficulty!"

Every time I tried to compress my drums and bass to make them tighter, I'd end up with a squashed drum sound and a weak low-end.

I was never really sure what all the buttons on the compressor did, and I certainly didn't know how to use them to create tight mixes like I heard from expert engineers.

Balancing the dynamics of the song without squashing and over-compressing each instrument was foreign to me.

Sure, presets were handy to start with, but I usually got lost trying to tweak them to suit my mix.

If I finally got a good mix using EQ and compression, I'd derail the entire thing again when I added reverb and delay.

I'd end up with way too much reverb, making my mixes sound weak and washed out. Then, when I'd return to the mix the next day I'd overcompensate for my mistakes and end up with a mix that sounded two-dimensional and flat.

I honestly didn't understand what to listen for in a mix so I kept randomly putting plug-ins on tracks, tweaking presets that didn't fit, and selecting inappropriate effects that weren't suitable for the song.

You probably share same problems I used to have.

Once you're done recording, you have to make all those tracks fit together to sound like the song you hear in your head.

However, all you get is a muddy mix where the drums take over the bass in the low-end, the guitars sound thin and your vocals are buried underneath the instruments.

Because of that, you can't create a clean mix where you can hear all the instruments clearly.

Even worse, if you finally get a decent sound in the studio it'll still sound bad in your car. No matter what you do, you can't get your mix to sound the same anywhere.

Let's not forget about the time it takes to mix a whole song. Even if you've gotten so good at mixing that your songs sound good across the board, you might still waste a lot of time tweaking the final mix instead of knowing when it's good enough to release.

I understand exactly what you're going through.

As you already know, I've been there.

Luckily for you, I've come a long way since then, Today my band mates, clients and music friends compliment me on how clean and clear my mixes sound.

They love the fact that they can hear each instrument in the mix.

My kick drum doesn't clash with the bass guitar anymore. Instead, they work together like a well-oiled rhythm machine, keeping the mix clean but thick in the low-end.

Even the guitar player and the vocalist have stopped fighting about which instrument should be louder because they can hear themselves equally.

Today, when I add compression to a track, I know exactly how to add punch without squashing the sound.

I'm not scared of tweaking the settings anymore. I know what buttons to push to make my mixes tight and loud. My drums pack a punch when I need them to hit hard, but they can also lay back if the genre demands it.

I've learned to compress each instrument so you can hear everything clearly without the tracks sounding lifeless.

Once I've balanced my mix with EQ and tightened it up with compression I now love experimenting with different reverbs and delays to create space and depth.

Instead of randomly selecting the wrong reverbs I now have a system in place that helps me choose the best way to add the right space to a mix.

Throughout the years I've amassed a huge bag of tricks for using reverb and delay to create depth in my mixes, without them ever feeling too washed out.

Lastly, I spent a lot of time experimenting with different saturation plug-ins to get the best results. Not every saturation plug-in fits with every track, so through trial and error I discovered when and where to use the right style of saturation to bring my mixes to the next level.

Put simply: I'm proud of the mixes I release today. I can clearly hear the improvements I've made throughout the years, but the best part is:

Now, musicians and bands love my mixes enough to pay for them!

But here's a secret: If you're smart, you learn to do it yourself. That way you save money because you don't need to hire anybody else. You'll already have the knowledge needed to crank out professional mixes. Knowledge that may even get you paying gigs as you show your mixes to other musicians.

If you want to get to that level, it's clear as day what you need to do to improve your mixes.

Newsflash: it's not buying another expensive plug-in (as much fun as they are to play with...)

Nope. It's learning how to use the tools you already have to get a great mix.

When you know how to use the tools you already have, you not only save money from all those plug-ins you won't need to buy, or the mixing engineer you don't need to hire, but you also save time by knowing exactly how to transform your demos into professional, quality mixes that jump out of your speakers.

When you know instinctively how to get rid of muddiness and a flabby low-end you'll crank out mixes much faster than if you were playing with a new plug-in every day.

You'll feel like a virtuoso musician that can jam with everybody in any genre, except in this case, you'll be mixing those musicians together to make them sound amazing.

And with enough songs in your portfolio you'll start getting paid work from bands that like your mixes enough to hire you.

At that point it pays to work fast. The better you understand how these five mixing processors work, the faster you'll transform their rough recordings into polished mixes.

I don't tell you this just to get your hopes up. I tell you this because I know you can achieve this too.

It's exactly how I started getting paid, and there's no reason you can't do the same.

Even if audio isn't your main job right now you still need to know how to make good mixes, even if it's just in your spare time.

Throughout the years, after countless hours of trial and error, I finally know what I'm doing and it always comes back to the basic five processors you already have in your audio software.

Because I've dedicated myself to helping musicians and engineers like yourself how to make a bigger impact with their music, I want to teach you everything I've learned since the beginning.

That way you can avoid my mistakes AND use my shortcuts to get impressive mixes you can be proud to release.

The 5 Processors for Professional Mixes Every Successful Engineer Uses:

If you want to create professional mixes that are good enough to charge for, you MUST know how to use these processors:

1. Equalization

EQ makes all your instruments fit together in the frequency spectrum, clears up the low-mid muddiness and gets your mix to sparkle.

2. Compression

Compression tightens up the sound of your mix, add punch to your instruments and keeps your dynamics steady.

3. Reverb

Reverb adds space around your tracks so that it sound three-dimensional and big instead of flat and boring.

4. Delay

Delay adds depth, effects and excitement to your song without cluttering up the track and making it sound washed out.

5. Saturation

Saturation is your secret sweetener to bring out cool harmonic content in your instruments. It'll add warmth and thickness without adding boominess to your mix.

Those are the plug-ins that every professional engineer uses to get those great mixes that you hear on the radio.

If you want to turn on the radio or play a song on Spotify and say, "hey listen, I mixed that!" then it's time for you to stop chasing the legendary pot of plug-ins at the end of the rainbow and learn a workflow that teaches you to create great sounding mixes using the plug-ins you already have.

You don't need to jump from one Youtube trick to another, waste time with trolls on audio forums or buy more gear to make your next mix sound fantastic.

I've already spent the time learning everything you need to know so I can give you the shortcuts you need to make better mixes in less time.

It's time for you to learn a step by step process to create powerful and punchy mixes using the tools you already have in your DAW.

Take a Look Inside the Course

As soon as you join, you'll have instant access to the course on both your computer and mobile device. All modules have both video and written content.

""I found this course to be detailed, relevant, and very practical - and quite a bit of fun. Specifically, I found each of the feedback videos comprehensive and balanced, each of the tutorial videos were engaging and detailed, yet it was not "preachy" as "this is the only way to" I learned the difference between EQ'ing for balance and cohesion and EQ'ing for color and dimension. The visual component of seeing the specific instrument's frequency range really helps nail problem areas more efficiently. Also, this course has changed (and simplified) the way I set up a session. The idea is great. You explain a little bit of why you use the plugin and what the overall goal is. Then you do it"live and then explain what you have done. I realized that all you need is basically only these 5 plug-ins.""

Musician and Mixing Engineer

Here's What You'll Learn From Mixing With 5 Plug-ins

Module 1 - Getting a Great Balance and Static Mix

  • How to set up your session for a faster workflow so your mix is done sooner. If you want to use processing like bus compression effectively this is the prep work you need to follow.
  • Your essential critical listening and pre-mixing session. Before even slapping on a plug-in, it's good to be familiar with all the little things you'll find in every performance. Bring those out first before you do anything else.
  • How to visualize your mix and start with the end in mind.
  • How to approach your mixes depending on what genre you're working on and the complexity of the tracks.
  • How to approach your mixes in mono to make it easier to create separation between your tracks.
  • What to think about when you're panning in both mono and stereo.
  • If you give me only 7 minutes, I'll show you how you can get a great balance and a solid rough mix FAST.
  • How to balance your drums to get a good foundation going.
  • How to use the 1 dB rule to get a great balance that requires less adjustments later down the line.
  • Learn to use busses and groups to make your mixing easier (and faster) in the long run.
  • 3 Ways to approach an initial rough mix.

Module 2 - Creating Separation in Your Mixes With EQ

  • How to use filters to clean up your low-end, fix your muddy mixes and get rid of harsh high-end.
  • The 3 primary functions of EQ.
  • The time-saving EQ method that helps you mix faster
  • How to use EQ to bring out the best of the drums (whether you're mixing acoustic drums or programmed beats), bass, guitars, keyboards and vocals, and other instruments.
  • How to get rid of muddiness, reduce boom and add presence and sparkle to a mix using JUST EQ
  • The two-step process to use low-pass filters to tighten up guitars while making them cut through the mix
  • The underused frequency area where you can bring out the character of the keyboards without masking other aspects of the mix
  • How to EQ a vocal-heavy song so that the backup vocals don't overpower the lead vocals
  • The most important, but overlooked aspect of using EQ to rebalance your mix to hear the separation between all the instruments in your song
  • How to keep the mid-range in check so you don't get boxy kick drums, honky guitars, muddy bass or nasally vocals. Take the guesswork out of EQ and follow along so you know exactly when and why you should cut and boost each instrument.

Module 3 - Creating Punch and Tightness With Compression

  • How to use every button on your compressor to effectively add punch and power to your mix.
  • How to use the ratio to squeeze your drums and make them thicker, punchier and more powerful
  • The two most important knobs on your compressor and how they affect the entire sound of your tracks. Working these knobs wrong will make your instruments sound dull and lifeless
  • How to use compression effectively (and knowing why you should be using it in the first place)
  • The sneaky way to use presets to speed up your mixing (while still tweaking them for the best results)
  • How to use two different compressors in serial to get the best of both worlds that are better than the sum of their parts. This is an incredible trick for big, in-your-face vocals
  • How to know which compressor style and emulation to use on each instrument. If you've wondered about the difference between VCA, FET, or OPTO you'll know EXACTLY how each one sounds after this video
  • The easy way to use parallel compression as an insert instead of a send to make your punchy parallel compression even easier
  • How to create a compression system to make every compression decision easier on every mix.
  • How to apply compression to your tracks, your submixes, your master buss and in parallel for the best results.
  • How to use parallel compression to add punch, thickness and weight to your drums.
  • How to approach multi-band compression.
  • How to rebalance your EQ after compression to keep everything going smoothly. Compression alters the volume and loudness of each track so careful rebalancing is key to keeping your song consistent every time you add a new processor to the mix.

Module 4 - Adding Depth and Space With Reverb and Delay

  • Exactly what all the crazy settings on your reverbs do and how you can use them to add space and depth to your tracks
  • How to know which room mode to use, and how they affect the feel of your mix
  • The easy way to add an all-around reverb to instantly create space in your mix
  • What you should NEVER add reverb to in a mix. Adding too much reverb to everything will result in a washed out mix. Make sure you keep these few things dry.
  • 7 ways to find the right reverb for your mix, whatever genre you're working in.
  • How to use short and weird reverb settings to make bigger snares.
  • The difference between pre and pos-fader sends when using reverbs.

  • Do you make these mistakes when creating separation between electric and acoustic guitars? Learn how to separate acoustic and electric guitars with different reverbs based on what they're playing
  • How to use modulated stereo delays to to keyboards. This subtle trick will add depth to your keyboards without cluttering up the rest of the mix
  • When to use delays instead of reverbs when you want to add depth without adding too much space.
  • How to use delays on guitar solos, rhythm guitars, lead vocals, drums and percussion, as well as organs, synths, and keyboards.
  • How to use delays to create stereo widening to create a powerful stereo image.
  • How to place backup vocals behind the lead using reverb and delay.

  • How to make your mixes sound exciting without excessive tweaks.
  • What to think about when you can only mix on headphones.
  • How to know when to quit and call your mix FINISHED!

""Overall, I really enjoyed the course. I think for me the most valuable thing was seeing your screen and watching your thought process visually. I have read mixing textbooks in the past and the information is simply too dense to be all that useful. In particular, the "Mixing with no plug-ins" video was extremely helpful. I realized that many of my major mixing woes were caused by poor organization and skipping over fundamentals. I've been mixing for a while as a hobby and in that time have picked up many bad habits, and this course definitely helped me re-learn the habits that make for better mixes. I really enjoyed the course. I personally didn't really want to use the song that you were mixing and instead opted for applying the techniques I learned from the videos to my own mix. I would certainly recommend this course to anyone who is starting out on their mixing journey as well as folks like me who have been mixing for a while but haven't learned good fundamentals. I am very satisfied with my purchase. Thanks so much for doing what you do, Björgvin!""

Frequently Asked Questions

As soon as you sign up you'll get access to the full Mixing With No-Plugins course that you can take from your computer or your smartphone. Once you finish the course you'll have all the knowledge necessary to create amazing mixes using only five plug-ins.

Not at all. You can follow the course using whatever DAW you're most comfortable with. All of the mixing techniques I show you can be done with any DAW.

You can certainly search for videos teaching you each individual plug-in, but no video will tie all of the plug-ins together like this to show you how to use all five of them to transform your recordings into great mixes. Instead, you'll end up wading through poorly explained techniques and watching a bunch of ads.

Mixing With 5 Plug-ins is my flagship course. It's VERY in-depth and comprehensive. It's not just a quick video explaining what mixing is. Mixing With 5 Plug-ins is much more than that. I don't just mix. I also explain everything about each plug-in and go much more in-depth into the theory and practice of mixing in general.

Mixing With 5 Plug-ins is honestly the only information you need to create great mixes you can be proud to release.

That's understandable. You've got a lot going on. However, imagine how much time you'll save in the future being able to easily mix song after song using the five plug-ins method I teach you in the course. I would argue that you're wasting more time trying to figure this stuff out on your own instead of learning from somebody with over a decade of mixing experience.

Not at all. You can use any EQ, compressor, reverb, delay and saturation plug-ins you have available. I use a combination of a few plug-ins which you probably have similar versions of so you can use whatever you have access to in your DAW to get great results in this course.

This course includes all the information I've learned from 11 years of mixing music. I guarantee that it will teach you how to improve your mixes exponentially.

You also have the ability to ask follow-up questions inside the course area if there's anything that's still unclear after taking the course.

That said, if you don't think Mixing With 5 Plug-ins taught you anything and you just didn't like the course at all for any reason, simply email me and I'll refund your entire order. If you're not happy, I'm not happy.

This is for anyone wanting to learn how to use EQ, compression, reverb, delay, and saturation to improve the quality of their mixes and take their songs to the next level.

It'll teach you to get the most out of EQ, compression, reverb, delay and saturation so all you need after that is consistent mixing practice.

I won't teach you to import the mix session (just drag and drop audio usually works) or tell you what a fader or a pan knob is. I assume you know at least that much.

But I will condense all of my experience with mixing that I've learned in the last decade. If you're a beginner I will bring you to a more advanced level. If you're already familiar with mixing I'll still build upon your skills, giving you advanced techniques to improve your mixes.

My students have used the five plug-ins method to mix every style of music, from rock, country and folk to EDM, hip-hop and pop. The course is designed to give you the knowledge needed to use those plug-ins on any instrument in any genre.

This works as if you were to hire me to be your personal mix teacher, using your own multi-tracks.

Here's what you'll get from the 1-on-1 coaching program:

  • Mix Improvement Session: Regular 1-hour one-on-one coaching sessions including feedback on your song and mix improvement ideas. I make sure you're aware of all the techniques you can use to improve your song, including advanced parallel processing, side-chain routing effects, bus processing, and effective EQ'ing, to name a few things.
  • Professional Mastering: Once your mixes are finished I take the songs and master them professionally so that they sound as good as they can be, making sure that they're dynamic enough and loud, but not so loud that they get turned down on streaming services. You get a high-res WAV and mp3 to use for your release.
  • Release Strategy:  A second layer of one-hour coaching calls where we talk about every step you take to release the songs, including advice on cover art and all those things that people often gloss over. I walk you through the entire process to make sure you're optimizing your song listing as well as your Spotify artist profile. I have some web design services you can use to create simple cover art for your song

In short, I make sure that you are confident with your finished mix, I master it so that it's loud enough to compete on streaming, and then help you proudly release your song to the world, giving you the necessary promotional strategies to help you get more success.

A hobby is something you’re passionate about. An "amateur" musician is a lover of making music. If you want to be proud of the mixes you make in your free time as a hobby, you should know how to do it properly.

I started out doing live sound so I understand where you're coming from.

The truth is: then you mix live sound, you also use EQ, compression, reverb and delay so understanding how to use them is just as important when running live sound as anything else you do on the stage.

What Are Students Saying?

"The results sound huge"

"Mix is up - and this one was really a lot of fun. After rewatching parts of the video, I decided to take a simpler approach to avoid automation - just to see how it worked. I think the results sound huge. Overall, I mostly used the EMT Plate by UA; however, I did add a TAL Smooth Plate on the lead vox, and a beat synced delay (Metric Halo Dirty Delay) timed to 1/64 on the left, and 1/8 on the right, with some added drive for more gain. Seemed to thicken up. Hope you like it." -Howard Rabach

I learned some techniques on how to deal with "bad" frequencies.

"I learned a lot from [the] mixing without plug-ins part. Making groups and dealing only with the volume knobs was nice preparation before the mix. The EQ part was very good because I learned some techniques on how to deal with "bad" frequencies." -Piotr Kaminski

"A vast difference for me!"

"I learned to simplify; up until now, when I would organize and setup a session in my DAW, I would create FX busses for every individual track, and separate sub-mixes for each group on top of the busses. With this, I kept it simple, and followed the pattern from the video - combining more instruments to fewer busses in total. I think I still ended up with one or two more than the video, but that's a vast difference for me!" -Robert Rubino

"Quite ear-opening"

"Impressed by your fluent equalizations and how you tackle those jumping out loud frequencies. I've often read about setting levels in context rather than in solo but never really got it. In this respect, I found this quite ear-opening." -Laurent K

"Having fun with this!"

"Having fun with this! I tend to make things complicated quickly, so I appreciate being forced to keep it simple. Thanks!" -Mike Lingle

"Thank you"

"Thank you for all of your tips and techniques you share in giving the bass drum and bass guitar their own space in the audio spectrum. Thank you for sharing your experience to improve my work :)" -Pedro Guzman

"I was a total rookie a couple of years ago and I found your forum online. I learned a lot from your followers in there, and also by you. I've taken the Mixing With 5 Plug-ins course, read a lot of different stuff you have around, and also did your online 1-on-1 lessons which really made a huge difference. Talking to you in person and getting pinpointed tips was really helpful. When we first met I had already made one album which was... kinda ok, but I just knew that I needed to learn more. My final album would never have been the same without you"

Kjell-Vidar Teig

""My new album Parts and Labor just went up on Spotify, etc. and Mixing With 5 Plug-ins and the parallel processing courses are what pulled it over the finish line. Rather than attempt to learn everything a professional engineer might know, I purchased the course from Audio Issues. It’s basic, ground-up instruction on going from zero to a quality mix in the fewest number of steps. Since I had the audio tracks recorded already, I substituted my tracks for the audio that is provided in the curriculum. This was very effective, in that I was more vested in the learning process. I turned it from a two-step learning process (take class, apply what you learned) into one, applying the knowledge in real-time. There is very little in this world more soul-satisfying than completing this long process with something you can feel proud of – something that is in the world forever.” "

Home Studio Musician, released Parts and Labor in 2019
