FOR MUSICIANS, PRODUCERS, AND ENGINEERS TIRED OF QUIET MIXES

Are You Making This HUGE Mistake With Your Music?

In the last 15 years of working in the audio industry and helping thousands of musicians and engineers create great music from their home studios, I've seen every mistake in the book.

But this one might be the biggest.

If you’re like most musicians and producers I’ve taught to make radio-ready records, your mixes probably sound decent enough already.

But your mixes fall flat when you listen to your music next to pro records.

  • They’re quiet and weak compared to commercial records.
  • They lack the punch and power you’ve always loved from your favorite mixes.
  • They don’t have the thick low-end and shimmering highs that the pro records have.

In short, they’re missing the extra polish that puts them in the same league as the pro mixes you want your music to sound like.

Does That Feel Familiar?

Don't worry. I know exactly how you feel.

Back in 2009, when I went to audio school in Madrid, I would mix a lot of music in my basement bedroom studio.

It wasn't an amazing space, but I made do with what I had. Besides, I could always rent pro studio space at the school to check my mixes.

I loved attending audio school because it allowed me to hone the chops I had developed as a live sound engineer in Iceland.

So, I used every moment to practice my mixing skills.

But even though my mixes sounded fine, something felt off.

They didn't sound powerful enough, so I kept pushing up the faders, adding more compression, and trying to make my mixes louder so they could compete with professional records.

But when I bounced out my mixes and took them to the pro studios at school, they always sounded way too quiet.

It was strange. They sounded loud enough in my home studio, but they would vanish on the pro monitoring systems in the school's expensive control rooms.

I couldn't figure out why until one day when I sat down at my computer in my bedroom studio.

I opened the DAW and started back where I left off, and the first thing I did was reach for my interface to turn up the volume.

That's when I realized...

The volume was MAXED OUT!

No wonder my mixes sounded loud enough in my studio but quiet everywhere else.

The only thing I was making louder were my speakers!

That meant my mix was almost 50% quieter than any of the professional records I listened to.

If I played my mixes next to commercial songs, the lack of volume would vanish them!

So yeah...if my mix had come on after a professional record, you could've hardly heard it!

So what was the difference there?

One Word: Mastering

My mixes weren't loud enough because they weren't mastered up to professional standards.

Making your mixes loud had nothing to do with cranking up the volume of your interface OR even maxing out the volume of the master fader inside your DAW!

(And before you ask, no, it's not even about cranking your limiter to the max either...)

Mastering your mixes is much more nuanced than that.

And if you're not mastering your mixes, they won't feel professional enough next to pro records because they're not loud enough.

Mastering Transforms Your Finished Mixes into Release-Worthy Records

I know from experience, both from working on mixes and helping students improve their mixing skills, that there are a million different ways to mix a song.

But there's only one way to make them sound like a professional record, and if you don't know how to master your mix so that it's loud enough to compete, it doesn't matter if you actually mixed your song a million times.

It still won't be enough.

You'll still be missing the final ingredient: Mastering.

That ingredient adds that final 10% - the final polish that makes your mixes stand out.

Skip the Mastering Step at Your Own Risk!

After years of seeing home studio musicians and bedroom producers struggle to compete with the pro records they hear on the radio, I realized there was a big disconnect between "great mixes" and "radio-ready records."

Mastering is the final stage that separates "good mixes" from "release-ready records."

If you skip this stage, your song won’t ever sound competitive.

You can mix a great song, but if it's not mastered up to broadcast-ready standards, it'll be too quiet and weak to compete.

When you master your mix, you’ll create the perfect balance throughout the frequency spectrum, but you also add the sweet spot between dynamic and LOUD.

That sweet spot where your song sounds loud but doesn’t get turned down on Spotify.

Or worse yet, gets turned OFF by people because they don’t sound broadcast-ready.

Mastering your mix is the difference between somebody listening to your track instead of skipping to the next song.

 Maybe You Already Know This?

You might already know that mastering is the key to taking your mixes and making them into professional and punchy records.

But you may be asking yourself:

  • "How do I use all these plug-ins to master my mixes?"
  • "How do I make them loud enough so I can feel confident in releasing my songs?"
  • "How do I ensure my clients don't think my mixes are weak when I send them a test mix?"

And that's exactly what I'll share with you on this page.

Let’s Spill the Sith Sound Secrets!

Mastering your mixes used to be the domain of the Voodoo Magic Sith Mastering Engineer, who guarded all the secrets to loud and powerful records inside their Studio Temple of Sound.

NOT ANYMORE.

You can do it too, even if you don't have a high-end mastering studio or expensive outboard gear.

Today, you have access to all of the technology you need to create professional-sounding, radio-ready records in your home studio, and that includes the final mastering polish you need to do if you ever want your mixes to compare to commercial records.

So, I've decided to show you my exact process for mastering any mix so that it's both loud AND dynamic enough to stand up to your favorite records.

Bonus #5 -  Mastering Hip-Hop in the Box ($97 Value)

Even if hip-hop isn't your genre of choice, you'll still learn a lot of valuable tricks for making your mixes loud, punchy, and powerful.

If you're regularly releasing singles and doing all the production yourself, it's simply easier to have instant access to the mix in the same session as you're finalizing your record with mastering plug-ins.

But that's actually a good thing because you'll understand how to identify whether things are "mix issues" that need fixed in the mixing session, or "mastering issues" that can be fixed on the master bus.

This is how many of you are finishing and releasing your singles today so I wanted to make sure you knew exactly how to "Master on the Mix Bus" if that's what you want to do.

"But shouldn't I just hire a pro mastering engineer?"

Sure, you can always send your mix off to a mastering engineer and they'll take care of that for you, but that will cost you quite a bit over time.

It can quickly get expensive if you’re making a lot of music. A good mastering engineer on Soundbetter will run you about $80/song.

The average price for a mastering engineer on Soundbetter is $80/song.

Let's say you want to eventually release ten songs to put into an album...?

That's $800!

So if you're looking to work on a lot of music in your career, that'll cost you a LOT of money in the long run.

"Can't I just use an online robot mastering service"

There’s nothing inherently wrong with using robots to master your tracks, except for the fact that there are robots mastering your track!

You can still get great results, but it’s not like there’s a human being making decisions that are best for your song. I’d even go so far as to recommend using these services at least once to get a feel for what they do to your track.

Then, you can use that track as a reference while you’re learning how to do it yourself.

"I don't think I'm qualified to master. It seems too advanced..."

Honestly...it's really not. If anything, mastering is simpler than mixing.

Remember, I'm the guy who tells you to Mix With 5 Plug-ins right?

Well, what if I told you that you only need THREE plug-ins to master?

  • Linear Phase EQ for balance across the frequency spectrum
  • Multi-band compression for tightness, punch, and glue
  • Limiting to make things loud and competitive

That's what most professional engineers use while they master, and there's no reason you shouldn't learn how to use those tools too.

Are you ready to learn it yourself?

It’s both cheaper and easier to learn how to do it yourself.

You already have broadcast-standard mastering tools that come built into your audio software, and if you want to upgrade to fancier tools down the line, it’ll still be cheaper than hiring a mastering engineer.

It took me years to learn how to mix and master up to professional standards, but I’ve been helping thousands of home studio musicians and bedroom producers like yourself create broadcast-ready records from their home studios for over ten years.

Master Your Mixes is where you save money and discover how to do it all yourself.

Testimonials From Clients and Students Whose Sessions I Used in the Mastering walkthroughs

"it's a dream come true to get this song sounding so good."

"Wow! It’s done and dusted! What can I say, it's an absolutely fantastic mix/master. It's a dream come true to get [Fire] sounding so good. It's perfect! It has a great balance and you can hear everything. I think you have done a fantastic job. I can hear that you have implemented all the aspects that you talk about and teach thru Audio Issues. It sounds amazing and really consistent on a number of different speakers. The mix is a nice celebration of the guitars and the song and vocals come to the fore which is the main objective and it is a joy to hear with your mix."

-Chris McConville, Indie Artist, U.K.

“Thanks again for selecting the tune. "Simon, Taylor, Denver, Cash" is our best single release ever.

"Our listeners have been sending us messages about the tune, and are gushing on the song. So many folks are talking about how beautiful it sounds. I know that the work we did recording and arranging played a large part, but your mixing/mastering job was the icing on the cake. That was the first song I ever recorded myself, and along with that came a whole bunch of doubt. I just didn’t know if I was capable of recording quality enough tracks on my own. Hearing your mix come back sounding professional and legit gave me the confidence to continue investing in this journey. This has been a dream of mine for several years, and your role has encouraged me in a deeply meaningful way. Your mentorship has been instrumental and hugely impactful and I know our future albums will have your thumbprint all over them."

-Eric L'Esperance, Ash & Eric (The Promise is Hope), Massachusetts.
